No Such Thing As Safe Tap Water

There Is No Such Thing As ‘Safe’ Tap Water

Despite being at the top of the global developmental ladder, the United States has a poor track record for delivering uncontaminated drinking water to the public.  It is time to get real about the ‘tap water problem’ the “Ultimate Children’s Issue Today”.

Water is life.  Water is so intrinsically connected to life, if you counted all the molecules in the human body, 99% of them are water.

On average, a human life can be sustained for up to three weeks without food, but you cannot survive more than a few days without water.  What is more important than having high quality, not contaminated drinking water?

Most of the water we consume comes from our domestic water supply.  We cook with it, bathe with it, use it in our pools, but rarely, if ever, consider how clean when it comes to drinking water.  We are sacrificing quality in exchange for a constant plentiful supply.

One of the technological developments of the modern era is the implementation of public sanitation infrastructure and the availability of water free from feces and other contaminants.  This along with improved nutrition and refrigeration was what reduced epidemics in infectious diseases.  Drinking contaminated water can cause either acute or chronic effect.

With the introduction of modern water sanitation technologies, another problem emerged, chronic, cumulative poisoning to nonlethal doses of contaminants such as pharmaceuticals-otc medications.

It’s easy to think that living in the United States gives us a free pass from such concerns.  But recent headlines speak to a dark reality we all need to wake up to.

You have heard about the ongoing battle for clean water in Flint Michigan.  Unsafe drinking water is not localized to Flint Michigan.  A recent report found 62 million Americans are exposed to unsafe drinking water.  This flag-raising issue does not trigger a safety response and will not until people start getting sick.

Safeguarding the health of our bodies includes our drinking water which has been properly filtered, and comes from a known-clean source.  Can we?  Can we trust the bottled water that comes from a reputable company?  The answer is NO, all water is contaminated.

Although the medical establishment works hard to hide the dangers of Pharmaceuticals-OTC Medications-Vitamins science is beginning to sound the alarm.  We have compiled a number of reasons to fix the looming problem.  And, no known process other than distillation can fix the problem.  That means carbon filters, triple filters etc. don’t fix the problem.

Scientist suspect that trihalomethanes which are by-products of the treatment process of your drinking water can be causing thousands of cases of bladder cancer.  A 2007 report stated a startling 50% increase of bladder cancer was identified in a group of subjects that had consumed contaminated water containing trihalomethane in 100 micrograms per liter or 1 part per billion in your drinking water.

Shockingly, over 600 disinfectant by-products that are known to cause harm to the human body have been identified in your municipal drinking water.  Even more alarming is the fact that the potentially harmful interactions between these chemicals are not reflected IN ANY OF THE TOXICOLOGY STUDIES OF INDIVIDUAL CHEMICALS.  Add to this all of your Pharmaceuticals-OTC Medications-Vitamins that you throw in the trash or flush down the toilet the costs to the public and our children and grandchildren is un-measurable. Here we see that our public water supply is being used as a petri dish.

Scientist were alerted that something “fishy” was going on in the Potomac River in the late 1990’s when fish were found with both male and female sex organs.  It was discovered that phytoestrogens in the water from birth control pills were affecting hormones in these fish.

This signaled a wake-up call, the presence of Pharmaceuticals-OTC Medications in the drinking water.  Not like pesticides, a wide range of Pharmaceuticals-OTC Medications can be found in all public drinking water in significant quantities, making second-hand Pharmaceuticals-OTC Medications a looming health problem affecting you, your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

It is argued that the concentrations of Pharmaceuticals-OTC Medications-Vitamins showing up in your drinking water are so low as to render them insignificant.  What a dangerous brush-off, considering that Pharmaceuticals-OTC Medications are formulated to be effective at LOW DOSES.  The long-term effect of this “purposeful” exposure has never been tested, especially in combination with other chemicals.

While the EPA does not want to alarm the public a previous administrator Lisa Jackson in 2009 admits that they are concerned and have allocated funds to research the issue further.  It is now 9 years later and still no answers.  The EPA admits that these activities are turning the public water supply of the United States into a “Hazardous Waste disposal” system for these products.

Knowing which chemicals are passing through your glass of water can be helpful for both monitoring and advocating for improvements to the drinking water supply in your City.
